The Situation of Job Seekers in Nigeria and Finding a Way

Even with the globalization that the world is experiencing today and abundance of career options, most Nigerian graduates are still focusing on getting government jobs and possibly staying there until retirement. Another category of Nigerian graduates are targeting the big multinationals and the very established Nigerian companies. But when these jobs are not enough to go round and maybe you graduated from a field that is not in demand in Nigeria and as a result you’ve been jobless for a while, what do you do?

Stay hopeful and keep applying for jobs, sometimes sending 20 applications everyday, even when you are not qualified?

Or lose faith in the country, that’s if you’ve not already, keep blaming and cursing the government and wishing you had someone in position of authority who you can send your CV to?

Or thinking of something illegal to do, Maybe Yahoo or  Malaysia. Hmm! You are on your own on this.

Or quit searching for jobs and startup a business of your own, stay patient and watch it grow?

Or look for the the most in demand and fast growing jobs, research to find out more about them and see if any will interest you, and start considering how you can switch to that career?

The last option is what this post is all about.

Long gone are the days when being a doctor, lawyer or engineer was only socially accepted career choices. The last few years have seen the rise of bloggers, social media managers, digital marketers, graphic designers, app developers and more. And they’re making it big. Take, for instance, Linda Ikeja, the queen of bloggers with millions of followers who look up to her for news and gossips. We all know how rich she is today and how fulfilled career-wise she is. So back to the topic,  there are too many careers to explore today and I wonder why some people are still sticking to there university certificates even when they can not get a job with it after many years of graduation.

The good news is that for most of the modern and in demand jobs, you do not need a  degree in that field to get the jobs. All you need is the skill. And an online course or tutorial will.

So Careesome is advising anyone who has been unemployed after years of graduation and NYSC to consider a career change!!

How do you start? Our professional recommendation.

Pick your 4 top interests; jobs values; skills & strengths; & personality traits. Find 10 in demand jobs you may be interested in and rank them accordingly so you can pick 3 or 4 out of the 10 to investigate further. Once you have those 3 or 4, find some people in that career to talk to, volunteer if you can and do whatever you can to find out more about the career. You do this so you’re making the best possible decision you can about your career change and not invest time, energy and possibly money on something you’ll regret.

We know it may be difficult for anyone to wants to make this journey on their own, so Careersome has created  whatsApp groups for people who are interested in similar in-demand careers, so they can learn together, share their experiences and grow in that field. Please note that you can only join maximum of two groups.  Below are the available groups.
